Botany in the first half of Sixteenth Century is to a great extent a comment on Dioscorides De materia medica. Two main trends are developped: one more innovative and theororetical. Sustained by Commentators and "de re herbaria Auctores". The more empirical other one is figured out by apothecaries. In developping his "Censurae" to Lusitanus. Mattioli tries to clarify the exact meaning of many species disputed in the Renaissance.
