The breeding system of Diplotaxis erucoides (L.) DC. Brassicaceae), a widespread Mediterranean weed found on arable fields and roadsides, is studied in this paper. The effects of different hand-pollination treatments on fruit and seed production are analyzed. Results demonstrate that individuals of Diplotaxis erucoides are able to self-pollinate. There are significant differences in fertility, number of seeds produced per fruit and fruit size between treatments that produce allogamy and those that lead to autogamy. Fertility decreases progressively along the following sequence : geitonogamy, autogamy by induced self-pollination and autogamy by spontaneous pollination.
