The first plubished treatise on conifers, written by Pierre Belon. Bellonius, appeared in 1553. In it the natural tradition of Teophrastus, Dioscorides and Pliny is combined with direct observation and journeys of botanical exploration following the example of the author's master Valerius Cordus. Despite its obvious interest, this work has remained virtually unknown in the history of Botany.
