Abstract

Originally the name Luzula sicula indicated a species endemic to Sicily, replacing Luzula maxima (= L. sylvatica) widespread in the Italian peninsula and Europe. Nowadays, this taxonomic treatment and this geographical distribution have been superseded. In fact, most authors regard L. sicula as a subspecies of L. sylvatica, a very variable species occurring in Italy also with subsp. sylvatica and subsp. sieberi. The latter is morphologically very similar to subsp. sicula; indeed they have been often joined or synonymized. In addition, both subspecies would occur not only in Sicily, but also in the central and southern part of the Italian peninsula. However, the relationships between these two taxa remain unclear in southern Italy. For facilitating further research, in this contribution we provide a lectotypification of the name L. sicula and a discussion of its diagnostic features.
